Changed the oil in my Sporty yesterday. Mobil 1 V Twin. Runs great. First time for me changing the oil on a bike, I have changed the oil on a car a thousand times, so it was pretty easy. Now I dont think the primary/tranny fluid change will be as easy as I dont have a grunt to hold the bike upright while I do the work.......
Be very creful when you level the bike with a block under the kick stand. Won't take much of a push to make it fall over on the other side. If you can, try and stabilize the bike with some tie-downs to the handle bars before you start wrenching.
have read somewhere that to remove the drain plug to drain the primary you need to use a Torx bit , what is that , It looks like you can remove the plug with a crescent wrench or a socket , by the way this would be on a 2007 1200R . I have already bought mobil 1 75-90 syn gear oil , a K& n oil filter and mobil 1 syn , ready to go when i hit 1000 mles thanks for any tips as i have changed the oil on my honda shadow several times , but this will be thefirst time on a harley

You have it right and there is no problem with your choice of oils & filter in MY OPINION. It's what I use. Make sure you have the proper wrench to get the old filter off.
thanks for the info and I spent about an hour on a sat morning when my bike had about 100 miles on it workin on getting the filter loose , i knew it would be a job and i did not want the bike to cool down when i was actualy ready to change the oil while i struggled with the filter
To change the trans fluid and get it all out, without help, do it this way.
1. Cut a gallon milk can about halfway up.
2. Slide it under the drain plug and take out the plug.
3. Sit on the bike and hold it level for about 30-60 seconds.
4. Set the bike back on the kickstand and replace the drain plug.
Oh, and use Amsoil V-Twin oil. It's good to use both in the engine and transmission.
Actually, I believe it drains better resting on the kickstand side, which is the same side as the drain plug.I only upright it when I check the level of the oil I'm putting back in.Since yas down there on that side, you might want to alsocheck the tightness of your primary chain as well. You should check it every time you change your tranny oil, at least.

Go to Pep Boys,or maybe it was AUTO ZONE,and get a filter wrench that fits on the end of the filter. There is no 'struggle' involved. Just insert your rachet drive, or extension, and twist the filter off.
