Unhappy Screaming Eagle Slip Ons

Hi all,

Been going through all the posts trying to decide on what exhausts to get for my 2010 Iron - and of course I am confused.

But, I think I have finally decided on the SE Street Performer Mufflers (80726-09A)

Now I have a couple of questions:

1. Do I need the SE Heavy Breather (29080-09)
2. Do I need a stage 1 air cleaner kit (29782-07)
3. Can I install them myself - I have absolutely no experience whatsoever
4. Do I need to remap
5. What else do I need to know/buy

Well thats about it but all your opinions and advice on what I should do is greatly appreciated!!

Dimitri

Well, I can't say for certain, but after having followed these forums for months now I'm pretty sure I can give you the basic answers.

1) No, don't "need"
2) No, don't "need"
3) I believe slip ons are pretty straight forward when it comes to installing
4) No (as far as I know, only need to remap if you change the air cleaner along with pipes)
5) Not sure on this since I don't know the exact tools needed

To sum it up...those pipes should be just fine on their own. You only get into the remapping when you start doing pipes AND air cleaner, one or the other by itself isn't enough to need a tuner. If I'm wrong, someone please chime in.

As Risk said, if you just do the pipes, you don't need a remap. I have the SE's and really like them. I'm also running the SE A/C with an K&N filter, but the bike had the dealer remap installed.

To do the full Stage 1 deal, you would do the exhaust and A/C. Ask your dealer about the remap for Stage 1 as I have seen some say it wasn't available for their bike. Not sure why. The dealer remap should work fine and save the expense of going with a fuel management module.

Thank for the help!

Is it worth getting the heavy breather and A/C or am I fine with just the slip ons?

Depends on what you want to accomplish. If it's just better sound, then slip-ons will get you there. If you are wanting a little more extra punch, then you should do both.

Don't know that I would go the heavy breather route. Thought about changing the A/C at one point and looked at the Arlen Ness Big Sucker, Joker Machine, and NRHS. If I changed or was picking new, I would probably go the NRHS route.

You do have one other choice if you change both (slip-ons & A/C). The Patriot fuel management.

I've been asking around and haven't heard anyone say they are garbage. Hot Bike picked it as the fuel management solution for a XR1200 exhaust shoot out that they just did.

I'm thinking just slip ons and Heavy Breather (for looks really) now. Maybe later I will add the A/C and remap to get the better performance.

I have to order all this stuff online so its easier to buy it all at once...

If you plan on doing both the slip ons and the SE Heavy Breather air cleaner its recommended that you do the remap also. Changing both out causes your bike to run lean/hot. Lean enough to cause serious problems? Not sure if/when it woud happen, but most of the posts I've come across say that if you do both you should do the remap. Plus, in your case, you want to do the heavy breather which if I'm not mistaken flows even more air than the standard SE stage 1 AC

IMO SE pipes SUCK! I have them on my bike and I took the baffels out since I could not get them to sound right no matter what I did to the baffels. They were on the bike when I got it, but I would never buy a set.

The Heavy breather is an air cleaner! So, if you do this, a remap is strongly advised.

If you go with any A/C change (NRHS, Heavy Breather, Big Sucker, etc.) along with the slip-ons, you are looking at a remap. I don't think you will be able to get it running right without it. Change just one, and you can get by without a remap. Change both, you need a remap. The remap would be a dealer download. The other option is to go with an fuel management system such as The Patriot, PCV, etc.
