thanks for all the good info. this is killing me - perfect riding weather, a parked Sportster and nearly empty pockets. it looks like the labor to get this installed is going to run about $140 at an independent shop (2 hrs vs 3 hr @ dealer ). Barnett clutch kit and spring $225 + tax. i'm reasonably handy and will be grabbing the service manual Saturday. what are the pitfalls of trying this myself and what specialized tools should i have?
Check out "easypullclutch.com". Don't know about their product fitting an SE, but I've put them on two Sportsters and they work great. Low cost and easy to install too. My kinda stuff.

Buy the Motion pro tool, not the Barnett tool for compressing the spring. The barnett tool is okay but not as good a Motion pro.
Their web site indicates it is for the 1200cc up to model year 01. I called and it is still compatible.
Thanks for the info. I will likely order it tonight. This is killing me... 85 ~ 90 degree afternoons & my bike is parked!
sporty pig is right on. There appears to be an inherent problem with the XL clutch. What years this affects I don't know. But I believe it to be a historically weak clutch. Check my sig, I started having problems as soon as I converted to a 1200. I was led to assume that an 883 and a 1200 clutch were one in the same being able to handle up to 95lbs torque. Apparently, not so or maybe. Mine was slipping in every gear. Fortunately, replaced under warranty by my dealer at 11K miles. I had looked into the SE upgrade. Extra plate and stiffer spring. End result, dealer ( a good one) replaced the WHOLE clutch and included a SE upgrade worth a couple of hundred dollars. Cost to me? Nothing! What a difference. I have a copy of the dealer work sheet. $1200 worth of parts and they included the upgrade under warranty. Sweet!!!!! Harder to pull for sure but certainly no problems now. Lucky me, finally got a break.
WOW, I just finished fixing the same problem, mine went out at 38k miles, 2006 1200C. I upgraded to the SE clutch, I found a hub and basket on EBay. I finishe deverything last night and rode to work today! It was nice to be back on 2 wheels
Barnett makes the scorpion clutch ~$500. It is a six coil spring design. I did not bother with it, going for the less expensive additional friction plate & stiffer spring.
Their clutch tool is for the diafram (spelling) spring style. It works but does not give a easy access as motion pro, nor is it as strong.
