I have an 09 xl883c> How tall of bar can i go until i have to change cables and brake lines? It has a factory riser in it im not sure how high it is just got the bike. I just like the look of the apes better than the factory set up.
Before you go with just asthetics, do your homework. There's a ton of info on Ape's on this forum. Click search and type Apes... Your height will play into factor for the right fit. It would help to sit on bikes or ride them with diff size Apes to get the right feel for you IMO. I'm 5"8" and rock 14" Zbars. I love em. My bars sit just below my shoulders for hand height, however the grips are at 12" cuz of the angle of the bar grips. Risers play a factor too. Are you using stock, or going with new risers...? Everything you change on a bike has a risk-and cost verse benefit. If you do the work yourself , you'll save a hefty amount of loot. If your non-mechanically inclined like myself you will end up somewhere around 1K for Ape's( Cables, bars and labor). I have read that you can get away with stock cables for 12" Apes, but is that what you can afford or is it what you want. If your gonna spend the cash then do it right. Otherwise you'll regret your purchase and spend more later to get what you deem is your cup of tea. I'm not saying I regret my customization path. What I'm telling you is be calculated. Looks don't always equate to practicality. BTW, welcome and enjoy the addiction. This forum is as evil as the wallet damage you'll do to your funds. Enjoy and ride safe.
I am pretty mechanically inclined i am a ford mechanic. I have riden a buddies. softail standard that had 16" and it was comfortable. I am 6' 2", and i would like my grips to be just above where my stock mirrors are located. I have no doubt in my tiny little mind that with a service manual i could change everything if i had to, but if i could get by with out changing cables i would like that too. I will not just put them on if i am not going to be satisfied with them. I also dont want to put anything on that would look goofy. I dont want to put any riser in there if i don't have to, but not sure if I have to have a riser or not.
I have a 05 1200C. I am changing the stock riser out for 1" risers and a 1200L speedo mount with 16" Burley narrow glides. It's going to be badass! I'm 5'7" and my hands will be at my shoulders.
I have a 99 custom. I changed the riser to 1 1/2" and went with 16" narrow apes from hill country. On the custom models you have to change the speedo bracket if you change to a shorter riser. Obviously, the shorter riser, the taller the apes can be. I am 5-9" and the 16" are perfect for me. Just above my shoulders, depending on how I sit! I did all the work myself and it was no problem at all.
RyanC is right! do your homework, it will pay off in the end!
Good Luck
