I have an 06 1200 custom and its had a noise since day 1. 2400 miles on it now. its almost like lifter noise gets louder with higher rpm,s at 500 mile service dealer said its normal on sportsters, more noise than the BT. any thoughts
Is the noise a clicking noise? I seem to get a loud clicking when I am at driving at speed on my 2004 1200C, usually after the engine is pretty warm. Almost like a rattling, but nothing is loose, and it does not do it all the time...weird.

does yours come from the left side of the bike? if so, i have the same sound coming from mine. its like a metal vibration/rattle. something along those lines.
Had the same question, took mine back to the dealer had their tech. take it for a ride, that is the norm for 1200's
I have 450 mi on mine @1000 getting the pipes(lol)
I bought a 2008 Nightster about 3 months ago, with about 15,000 miles. V&H Staggered Shortshots on it, with a V&H Fuelpack. All around, it's a great running bike that is very quick, and I ride this whenever the FXSTC feels like too much bike. Like for bar-hopping!
Now I don't hear well, and have two hearing aids I don't wear when I ride, but this bike has a LOUD rattle/metallic noise that I can hear even over the V&H pipes, and if I can hear it, it REALLY must be loud. If I tuck my left leg in tight, right next to the gas tank, the noise is muffled and almost non-existent, but when I move my leg the noise makes it up to my ears.
It's definitely linked directly to the RPMs and seems to diminish when I pull in the clutch, but then again, I back off the throttle when I pull the clutch in so maybe that's coindidental.
I thought the valves might be loose as hell, but the engine runs fine...Heck it's fast as hell....so that doesn't seem right. I then thought the clutch or primary chain was making the racket. I figured on pulling off the primary cover this weekend to have a look around, but figured I check in here first, and I found this thread. Maybe it's just normal for this bike? If so, wow, HD should be able to do better than this! Maybe I need to have a couple of these HD tattoos covered up!
