Default Front brake not setting off the brake light on the rear.

I bought a 2004 xl88cc a couple of months ago but just notice that the brake like on the rear does not light up when I pull in the front brake, it works fine with the rear. I may be ignorant of the issue, but is the front brake lever suppose to activate the brake light, or is it wired so that only the back brake sends the electrical signal to the light? I would think both levers would be wired into the same circuit.

Sounds like a broken front brake switch or the lever is too far from the switch plunger. Front brake lever should activate the brake light, but is on a different switch circuit from the rear lever. Safety feature that way you don't lose your brake light completely when one fails.

Check switch position inside housing. It could be a bad switch, wiring, or switch is stuck in depressed position.

As it's already been said, the front brake switch is a simple mechanical switch in brake/throttle control housing. Could be a bad switch...dirty contacts, or broken wiring. Especially if you change bars lately, then a broken wire off the switch is likely. So start there, and hopefully that's where you'll find your problem, otherwise you'll have to track down the wiring through the harness and find out where it's broke.

The bars were changed before I bought the bike, so that sounds like the most likely cause. I will dismantle the housing and check out the switch and wires. Thanks guys for the advise.

The switch grounds the light so the default position is on if the lever insn't contacting the switch. It may be a short in the wire or the switch.
