I have a 2000 sportster 1200. When i go to start it the starter just clicks. If i put it in gear and rock the bike a few times the starter will engage. Do i need a new starter or can this be some other problem?

 

Check for loose connections.

 

That clicking sound is the battery saying it either doesn't have enough juice in it to turn the stater over, or that one of the battery connections is loose. Is it the original battery? My original battery just crapped out last year in my '00, but one of the battery cables also came apart the year before. Check the battery and cable connections.
