PIAA makes a great replacement bulb - be careful - my buddy with a Dyna overtightened the chrome ring when replacing his bulb and the glass shattered - not enough play for heat expansion.

The most important thing I've done was to actually aim the light. When I got my XL1200R, the headlight was wildly out of aim, pointed at a spot about 15 feet in front of the bike instead of down the road as it should have been. I spent 15 minutes to get that right and suddenly the stock light was almost infinitely better at night.

If you do go the route of using a higher-power bulb, I recommend Osram's 70/65 watt H4 offering. Any higher than that and you risk damage to the stock wiring and plug by pulling too much current.

I put a brighter PIAA light in with one of those diamond cut housings. But the bucket was to shallow for comfort (heat). So I took a 1.5 inch of strap steel and hammered out the ring closest to the black bucket. Its made so the stock rubber mount still fit. Had it chromed. Works great.

I bought the upgraded bulb from hd a while back and I figured it may be a bit brighter but, wow it far exceeded my expectations even my dad commented on how bright it is.
