My 3rd gear slips when I throttle up. It's weird, it only happens in 3rd. Last weekend I pulled the transmission and everything check out nice. I thought for sure it was worn engagement dogs, or the detent, but everything was perfect. Primary chain and clutch is in specs.
I'm curious when you say slip do you mean it shifts into 3rd and feels like a clutch slipping and not transferring power to the wheels? Or are you saying is slips into a false neutral when shifting into 3rd?
I believe there is an adjustment that you specifically place the transmission in 3rd, I guess a midway point of travel for the shifter shaft. You then make certain it's in it's correct placement position or you adjust until it is.
Having not done this myself I'm only passing on some info I think applies.
My whole point is that there is an adjustment it could be.
If I am not mistaken you put the trans in 3rd, and loosen the plate nuts On the detent / shifter plate. There is a hole that you insert a drill bit into and line up the holes. Try that

Does any of this make since?
It will engage in 3rd then it feels like it's slipping into neutral for a split second then back. A jerky motion. It feels like the transmission isn't engaging fully.

Thanks for the reply. My detent was held in place by a spring washer/clip. After struggling with the clip upon re-assembly, I welded it directly on the drum. I couldn't see any reason not to. Except for the fact I can't adjust it now!
My 02 does that in first gear after a stop. It will go into gear (or so it seems) then it takes off as normal, then it feels like it pops into place. It doesn't do it all of the time, maybe 20 to 25% of the time. Would that same adjustment fix that?
i had a 69 xlch that slipped in 3rd gear, i took it all apart couldnt see anything wrong.. went to a local indy that used to be in akron, they said the ears that engage the next gear get just a little worn on the edge.. looked again and just the corner edge od third gear was a little shiney, that was enough, changed it out never had the problem again..i changed the third gear and the one it engages to both, cost me $80.. probaly more now.. that was 10 years ago..

I have a 1991 I bought brand new and it does the exact same thing once in a while. I find if you shift into 3rd solid, and not hit the throttle too hard at first, it rarely happens. It is a bizarre sensation. I figured it was a worn gear dog, but I don't really have that much mileage on my bike. Perhaps since we have 1st year models of the 5 speed it's just a weird bug?
What you describe is exactly what happens on my bike as well. I've just learned to live with it.
