Well I have had some trouble with my sportster for a while and wondered if someone else has had this problem.
When the bike is cold it seems to be worse, but then it does it when the bike is hot, but not as much ( or so it seems ).
As your letting the clutch out after you put it into first gear it feels like you have put it in gear and goes like you have, but as you get at the end of the clutch movement it bangs into gear as if its not ( but it is ) and comes with a bang from the transmission.
I have replaced the clutch with the modded version which eliminates the spring plate and the gear linkage springs, and now it looks like I am going to have to delve into the transmission which I am going to leave till autumn.
Yeah it doesn't feel like any of the gears are damaged and only does it in first, if it was the shaft I would have thought it would jump out of gear, so I did suspect the shifters.
I have never taken out a transmission before, is there anything I should know before I do the job?.
It's pretty straight forward. You'll need some unique tools to get to the rest of the stuff off, but I can have a trapdoor trans. out in about 1-2 hours depending on how it goes. Just follow the factory manual. It's very clear on how to get down to it.
Getting to the trap door isn't going to be a problem, I just spend a load of money on tools to get the that far doing the clutch and gear linkage.
I'll look into the other tools, worse come to worse if the tools are going to cost a lot of in some cases hard to get I might strip it down to transmission and let a indy mechanic get the job done.
Pull off your detent plate and make sure the pins behind it are all seated properly. Use something like a brass drift and hammer to tap them all the way in. This is quite common on bikes that age.
