Got a Blackout V&H 2:1 for my bike. Had it sitting in the basement since November. Was waiting for Spring to pull her out of storage and bolt em on. They are bare headers leading to the single muffler. When I first pulled them out of the box, I was thinking they will probably get pretty hot .. saw a few posts recently saying they get "crazy hot" and melt boots.
I was looking at the designs and think the VH Shortshots have the same shape and with some modification, the shields for them would fit and probably look ok.
Aside from getting some and hacking them them up to see, was wondering if anyone had suggestions about this or advice on making a set of shields.
I considered the option of wrapping them, but its really not the look I am going for.
I'm with you. I installed mine a few weks ago and they do get hot. I like you don't want to wrap them, not my look either. I've been looking for an alternative. I was thinking about calling v&h and asking if they have a fix. If you try the modded up heatshields let me know how it turns out
I bought the 2:1 for my wife's Iron. V&H promised that they would have a heatshield. The rep even gave me a p/n. I guess it was never finished because the p/n never appeared on their site and the rep does not respond to my requests for an update.
The pipe does get hot. It is melting her heel and her right calf has been singed a bit. The pipes are wrapped - but that doesn't do much in the way of protecting your leg (or heel).
Spoke with a tech guy at V&H who advised that they planned to make shields for this pipe, but the test groups they checked with preferred the wraps .. so, no shield.
Regarding the Shortshot shield? He said the bends look similar, but are different enough that they cannot be modified to fit. Well, that sucks. Now, I am searching out an indy shop that can bend some pipe for me. I can cut them as needed to allow proper cover on the 2:1 then have clamp mounts welded on. If it all looks good, send em off to powder coating. Hopefully I don't spend too much on this project.
Madchemist,
wanted to let you know I installed the XIED on my bike this week-end. ($116.00)True to advertising it made a huge difference in the heat from my pipes. Bike was running very lean and I think it's more balanced now. Stopped the backfire too. I think I can wait a while on heat shields if it keeps running cool like this.

sounds good was looking to install my pipes this weekend. wanted to see how she ranb4 buying the XIED. With my schedule, I was not able to search out the indy shops to investigate pipe benders. I think before I jump off the bridge, I will see for myself just how hot they get and decide my next step from there. Thanks for the insight on the XIED
