2009 EFI 883L running rich? I think.
I'm assuming you opend up the side covers n such looking for an
after market ecm add on device,,,,,,,
HD downloads are all EPA compliant lean or close to It,,
They can't go "Fat" on the AFR,,,,
The EPA would fine the crap outta HD if they caught em...
I recently sold my old metric and picked up an '09 883L. I already love the bike just after a few hundred miles. I have been checking my mileage and am only getting around 39 mpg. From everything I have read this is way off. I know this is not all related to my riding style, I'm old. I am the second owner of the bike and it had 1900 miles on it when I got it. It runs fairly well and has plenty of power. I have noticed that even on cold days when I start the engine it idles high only for about 5 seconds and then drops to regular idle speed. It does this cold or hot. It does blow a little bit of black smoke when revving when cold. I checked the plugs and they are a little brownish on top but mostly black around the electrode. It does also smell a little rich to me also. I have checked for exhaust leaks and found none. The bike does have SE air cleaner and SE slip ons.
So my question is can there be any other reason for running rich on this EFI Sportster other than someone has messed with the fuel mapping? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
my 2010 iron doesn't do much (if any) better.
the lowest i got before i stopped checking a while back was 39mpg. i am usually between 40 and 50 mpg but was almost always closer to 40 than 50.
i am running stock AC and dealer installed screamin eagle slip-ons. my dealer didn't re-map the bike..... at least they didn't charge me for it.... and they charged me for absolutely everything else!
Here is the culprit, a SE race fueler. I've been looking all over the bike and here it was tucked under the wiring harness under the seat. Now I need to learn what to do with this thing. Should I chunk it and get something else, or keep it? I definitely will need to learn how to tune it. I'm sure there are some guys here that can tell me just what to do. I will be searching through the boards. Thanks.
