Default Chaps-How Thick?

Hi Folks.

I went to the Harley store today looking for a pair of chaps. They seemed a bit too thin. How thick are chaps normally I'll be driving quite a bit this summer and I thought it would be a good idea to get chaps. What brand of chaps do you wear?

... New rider.

Thanks.

Any leather that's 1.1mm or thicker i'd go with. That's the lowest of what I see sold at primary online places.

I've bought stuff that thick and it's plenty good.

All depends what you are wanting them to do. Keeping your legs warm just about any will do the job. For protection from road debris than the thicker the better. For lay down protection, get some leather pants or wear some Kevlar underwear to protect your ***.

I wouldn't even consider anything thinner than 1.4mm for abrasion protection in a crash. I've burned through 1.1mm pants, and won't make that mistake again.

I bought some fox creek chaps last year. the leather is very thick and nice.

However, it was a stupid, wasteful purchase. I should have just gotten the leather overpants. Now, if I crash and I'm wearing chaps, I get to lose my genitals and/or my ***. what the f was I thinking...

Stupid stupid stupid.

So, yea, no matter how thick the leather is, the *** and crotch leather is exactly 0.00 mm thick.

Chaps don't stop fitting when the beer belly expands too much, also tend to be a bit more adjustable and tailorable than straight leather pants, also cooler in hot weather. I'd rather have chaps any old day than pants, for one thing the chaps don't get that wonderful locker room jock strap smell. If they give you a leather rating or you buy your own leather and make your own I wouldn't go less than 3oz leather for good protection and if you go with something like buffalo (costs more but more protective) or kangaroo (expensive as heck but the professionals use it so it's very protective) even better. Whatever you get be sure you get up on how to care for them because you need to at least neetsfoot oil (available saddle shops and on fleabay) them occasionally to prevent cracking and dry rot of the leather.
