Yes you need exhaust gaskets. They only cost a few dollars each at the dealer.

Just installed forwards on my '99 883. Not too much trouble. Have to remove exhausts and I had to disconnect oil line to filter because it was in front of one of the case bolts you need to remove. I installed kit from Custom Chrome ($299 from Dennis Kirk) It is nice although the instructions are a little bit lacking. DEFINITELY use Loctite! Blue on stuff you think you'll need to remove or adjust and red on permanent stuff.

disregard I found some on line but too pricey right now

If that was the mech. at the HD stealer I would report them to the Harley company! They don't like it when the stealer feeds a bunch of BS to it's customers like that. I would also inform the manager of that stealer that that is what you are doing.
