Default Need help with paint

Hey guys I wanna strip the paint of my fenders and tank. Its chipped and scratched bad. I dont know if i should powder coat it or spray it with primer I am leaning towards primer so i can pay for some other things i wanna do to the bike. How do i strip the old paint of and get it down to metal? And to take of the rear fender do i have to take of the rear tire to get it off. I am terrified to do that. Thanks for the help guys.

I dont know about powder coating, but if your going to primer just go at it with 80 grit sandpaper on a vibrating sander and by hand in hard to reach spots.

It's messy, but you can buy aircraft stripper at WalMart for $5. Spray it on the tins and all the paint will just bubble up. DA w/ 80 grit will work too - just dusty and tedious that way.

I personally would NOT strip the paint. Feather out the chips and scratches with a sander using 180 grit. Then go over the whole piece with 400 or 500 grit and then paint it. Stripping is extra work and not necessary. Going to bare metal could compromise the final job down the road....

Pull the bottom shock bolt, jack up the bike, remove fender. That's pretty much it, besides the obvious.

And as stated, if you scuff the paint you will have plenty to bond to. That is of course as long as you still have good adhesion with the stock paint, and there aren't any of those pesky little decals between the base coat and the clear...

Go to youtube and type "how to feather edge paint". Basically, it's a process of sanding that brings you from base coat to primer to metal, etc. Simple ****.

Sand until the surface has NO shine to it.

Going to bare metal causes all kinds of ****. Work over the factory HD paint. It's the best and cheapest way to do it. Bare metal has all sorts of extra builds you need to cover it and make it right. Where as old paint does not.

Sand or scuff the chrome. Then paint. Simple as well.
