Long story short... bought my wife some V&H short shorts for her 2011 XL883L, but the bung threads in rear pipe were damaged from factory. Not doing a QA inspection prior to installing O2 into bung, it stripped the threads, but I can get the sensor 90% in. V&H warranty is going to replace the parts, but the wife wants to ride this weekend. I have the Fuel Pack in it as well.
Yes, if the sensor threads 90% of the way in, the tip of the probe will still be in the pipe, as long as you are sure the threads make a good seal, you should be good to go.
Start the bike cold, and hold a lighter or a match near the bung to check for any potential exhaust leak at those threads...no leak and you should be good to go.
Your reading might be off by 1-5% or so (max), but that won't hurt anything, just be sure to use the highest octane gas you can get to avoid any pinging.
I've installed O2 sensors in cars, many feet back from the headers for various reasons and the result was they read about 8% lean, which only resulted in the car running *slightly* more rich, which is always better than running more lean.
If anything it will read a bit lean, which will cause that cylinder to run slightly more rich, and that is a good thing.
