Default Are you freakin’ kidding me... crap.

So I decide I want to install a set of different foot pegs on my 48. With the clevis offset, I decided to cut and grind the longer one to make it the same size.

Cutting, grinding and painting took less than 15 minutes. Easy fix, no problem.

As I was trying to screw in the bolt that holds the bracket for the footpegs, it was not going in smoothly so I decided to chase the threads with a tap.

That didn’t go too well...

I hate when that happens. I tried the trick of welding a nut to the tap and twisting it out.

That didn’t go too well...

I took one of my carbide bits and basically ended up grinding out the tap a bit at a time. After about 2 hours, I got it out, rechased the threads and put it back together. What a PIA.

Left side went well though...

What a crappy day for a 15 minute job.

yep, first always make sure you are using the right size of bolts/taps, then always clean the hole first & lube those taps and always be very gentle with them and apply even force to each side of the wrench, they are brittle and easy to break.

Yeah, it wasn’t a big deal, I guess I was getting a little PO’d because the bike doesn’t even have a 100 miles on it yet. I thought I was going to have to pull the engine to get to the backside of it...lol.

I should have known, the day didn’t start good and went progressively down from there. Sometimes, it’s better to wait for another time.

But it’s fixed now and gave me a reason to ride even though it was 41 degrees.

If it happened to me I would try to use a punch and hammer to break the tap into pieces to get it out.

Actually, that was my first hour trying to remove it. I thought I could break it up into little pieces but it was such a small diameter hole and it kept bending the little punch I was using. (plus it was TRASHING the edge of it... I must have reshaped the end half a dozen times)

Anyway, no big deal, it happens to everyone, I just wasn’t expecting it for something so new and simple.

It's always when you least expect it that bad things happen.

I've found that the only way for me to accurately assess how long even the simplest projects will take me is to calculate the length of time for a complete idiot to do it...and then double it. lol

Glad you finally got it out of there.
