Default 2005 1200c coughing

I purchased a 2005 1200 custom this spring. I had the dealer install the stage 1 kit and screaming eagle pipes before the bike was picked up. The question I have is at low rpms, when the bike is in neutral, or when you are coming to a stop with the clutch engaged, quite often when I blurp the throttle, the engine coughs back through the carburetor. It is not backfiring through the exhaust. It is definitely coughing back through the intake. I took the bike back to the dealer for the 1000 mile checkup, and they looked at it and seems to have improved a bit, but the problem still exists. The dealer told me it is a common Harley problem, and that you will never be able to get rid of the coughing totally. I have been told the same from other Harley owners, yet I never hear other bikes doing the same. Could this just be a vacuum problem? Is it common?

Thanks to all!

Did the dealer re-jet with your Stage 1? "Carb farts" can be caused by improper jetting or improper mixture setting for your setup. Typically for an air cleaner and slipon muffler upgrade you'd need something like a 45 pilot jet and the mixture screw turned out about 2-1/2 turns (but as they say - your results may vary :-)

My 883 is stock as a rock as far as the motor goes. I get that caugh too. Not too bad after it warms up. But my question is this: on more than one forum I have heard mention of bringing the air mix screw two and a hlaf turns out from seat. Now I have not taken the carp apart yet, but I have been through the Clymer rebuild instructions a half dozen times and I don't see any mention of the air mix screw. Where should I be looking?

mwr19,
Make an appointment at the dealership to get the ICM version checked or check it yourself. I have heard that some bikes aftering getting reflashed will stop coughing or cough less.

>>>The dealer told me it is a common Harley problem, and that you will never be able to get rid of the coughing totally.

HE may not be able to get rid of it , but it's possible.

If you shim the main jet needle up with 2- #4 washers, this will richen up your mixture and more than likely end the coughing for you. Check out the do it yourself forum https://www.hdforums.com/m_65123/tm.htm

The jetting in your bike will be smaller than this, but the proceedure is the same.

Too lean. Remove the epa plug under carb behind float bowl. remove float bowl install a 45 pilt and start at about 1.5 turns out on fuel mixture screw. Rule of thumb is under 1 turn out too big of pilot over 2.5 too small. You need to be able to control the jet. Y our pilot jet is the most important jet in the carb. It is fueling through out the entire process. Have the incorrect jet in and you are messing with the rest of the entire fuel curve. I am huge cv fan, I take them modify the t-plate, balance the transfer ports, install large brass inlet line of the cheesy plastic one. Modify the slide, once done they tune right in . I install all SS allen screws, as well I hate the little screws. Use a K&N jet kit and they are a great running carb, For larger ones we bore the throat on the 40 and the 44's depending on application.

Thanks for the write up HDwrench! Mine is doing the same thing and has been buggin' me. I have had to take care of this on my four wheeler before, but wasn't sure on the HD. Appreciate the info.
