Some guys didn't like hydraulic brakes cause you couldn't use a shoe lace if the cable broke.
Some guys didn't like disk brakes cause they get more rusty than drums.
Some guys didn't like electronic ignition cause they can't set the timing and mess with the points anymore.
Some guys didn't like electric starters cause the battery might go dead.
Some guys dont like EFI cause...
Moral of the story: it's human nature to resist change.

I personally have no real issues with carbs, I have raced and tuned dirt bikes for years.. But I like EFI better.. I got my master motorcycle mechanics license back in the 80s, but have been a computer electronics tech since the 70s,, so I can live with either.

The biggest problem I have with carburated street bikes is that they were not designed for ease of access to the carbs.. On any racing dirt bike, you can pull the carb, clean, adjust, rejet and have it back in the bike in 15 minutes. On most street bikes it takes half and hour or more just to get the carb or carbs off the bike.

It would be nice if Harley EFI used WIDE BAND 02 sensors, like cars. This would solve a lot of problems (and save a lot of money) when changing mufflers, cams, heads, etc. The wide band 02 sensors would alter the AFR to whatever is necessary for a correct running engine at all rpms without having to remap or get a dyno tune.

It's not so simple as that because even with wide band 02's the computer is still programed to adjust to too lean of a mixture, you still need a controller to trick the computer to get maximum power, that's why they sell so many "chips" for cars & trucks.

I don't follow. Why do you need a trick for the computer? Maybe you can simply reprogram the ECM program? My Vette makes 410 RWHP and it is naturally aspirated. I had the thing tuned on a dyno. My truck also has custom programs for the mods I did to it. Somehow, I think EFI gets a bad rep because people are doing these silly tricks and dongles to do a job instead of doing it right. Some have bothered to actually put some effort into studying the system. Carbs are nice for the hacks that don't want to actually put work into it and do it via trial and error. Sure, there are a few that actually take the effort to understand what is going on and understand what the effect of each tweak does but for the most part, the people that I have encountered who like carbs seem to be of the "trial and error" sort of hacks that want a result that might be sloppy and not have to put too much effort or money into the thing.

Open wheel racing uses a fule that is close to a gas greatley modified FI is used for good reason. NASCAR now runs a ethanol/gas mix and will soon go over to FI.

Open wheel / NASCAR >>> total different racing, motors, fule, comps, no way to compare the two. <<< Nascar is all about Sponsors and pleasing the Public. They went with ethonal so they could say it's American fule God bless the Farmers. They would have gone with fi sooner but it was hard, until latley, to catch the cheaters. They went with fi to be modern and please the green mafia. The only differance between fi and carb in Nascar is an equal amount of fule is going into each jug. Those big pumper carbs provided fule to a 358 that got 7/8 hundered horse power. Not a problem Folks. Joey Lagonoa got fined $25,000 for just questiong why They changed to fi.

For the longest time the only carb/ohv motors used were NASCAR and Harley.

It's not Change Guys, in a real way, it's the fact that now all rides are leaning to being the same thing. Cars and Bikes. An over jeted 1200 harley has no problem runing in the mountains or sea leval because it's runing unburned fule thru the pipes until the high rpm range already.

Fine, both NASCAR and Harley have gone and will keep going to the Metric side . Racing and Riding will become generic. Another slide to make Life nonorganic, impersonal, controled by big goverment and green mafia money.

Keep those ol Harleys Boys the time is coming when vespas will rule the road, high teck geeks will control all the racing on screen, and the only thing to eat comes out of a tube.

That is assuming someone is trying to get maximum power.. It is just as likely they are happy with the getting decent gas mileage and just want to be able to change exhaust and intake as much for the sound as anything else without having to worry if it will make the engine so lean as to damage it.
