If it is set to run lean at stock and you don't rejet it, it can run it lean too. People have been leaning out in carbs too. Back then, nobody bothered to set them lean since there was no EPA to contend with

Some of the advantages of EFI over carbureted engines are:

Better fuel economy
Greater reliability
No need for periodic tune-ups
Reduced exhaust emissions
Major improvement in engine longevity

Anyone who understands the three laws of thermodynamics would know that carburetors can never be more efficient than EFI systems, nor equally efficient.

Who knows 5 guys that have carbed sportys

AND

Also know 5 guys that have EFI sportys?

What MPG do the carbed sportys get
What MPG do the EFI sportys get

I know I ride my EFI evo and TC's the same as I did when when riding my carbed evo and TC's. The EFI's get 5-10 mpg less.

I can still get ethanol free gas, so that is not the difference.

The little weight difference in the bikes is not the difference.

My riding style is not the difference.

When I got my first EFI I spent big bucks on tuning, getting it as good as it could get, (which made it get better MPG than the lean factory maps, but still not as good as the carbed version) so that is not the difference

On the TC's the first EFI I had was with the new 6 speed, so maybe the gearing is not as ideally matched as it was on the 5 speed...but I don't think the Sporty gearing changed when going from 2006 carbed to 2009 EFI.

I personally know more than a dozen guys who have had the same experience as me in going from carbed to EFI.

So if the lower MPG is not the EFI, what is it?

Not interested in hearing about the laws of thermodynamics or how on paper EFI is more efficient....I understand that...it makes sense to me also.

I am interested in hearing real world experience.

Don't you guys remember when it was not unusual for sportys to get high 40's & low 50's mpg, when they were being ridden aggressively, and every now and then there was a guy that rode conservatively and got in the high 50's?

Are there guys getting that with EFI's...maybe, here and there, but definitely the exception, not the rule.

I can get a low 50s MPG on a long steady cruise. Mid to upper 40s around town. Thats my only experience Im a grandpa and ride like one I think EFI can be more efficient and more powerful but the extremes of both of those produce too many emissions which the EPA doesnt like.

Im getting about 35 in tow and sometimes 50 to 55 on inerstate. I like the throttle response of my efi bike. I like the firing rite up whether its 100 or 5 below zero. I like to hear my bike too so i ride a little aggressive in tow. Im very pleased with my fuel economy!. Great thread!

I work on cages all day long. There is no way a harley can be compared to a cage. Or any bike to a cage for that matter!

Ok, my 2008 1200 gets 19 KPL X 4 = 76 Divided by 1.6 = 47.5 MPG +-

when I bought it it got 22 KPL = 55 MPG +-

When I added the wind screen the mileage dropped from 22 to 19 due to all the friction.

I like the reliability factor, the rumble factor seems good so I'm ok with the EFI at 71.000K without tuning issues, seems to run well. Fires right up, fairly smooth acceleration but need to swap out the plugs so cruising is a bit more smooth.

Regards,

.

Question. Is everything the same including the cams and heads and weight of bike, etc, etc?
