I've had something similar on other brands of bikes when the battery was warning me that it is about to go. Someone else may confirm or deny this with a HD.

I had this happen on my Road King. Ended up being the speed sensor. I tried to clean it and no luck. I had to replace it. It's got a magnet pickup on it.

Yep, does that on an HD too. Happened to me. Thought it was a fuse or sensor when I was on the freeway going 80. Then after a mile or two the bike shut down. Had a dead battery

Be sure to check all battery cable connections for loose connection, fuses and relays for corrosion. The speed sensor in the transmission could be dirty also.

Along with checking the battery and cables, and speedo sensor, mine went a little haywire this spring after multiple days riding in the rain. Dry day and a little heat down by the connector and it was all better.

Same thing happened to me when my stator went out and my battery died.
