Default which serice manual ...

P.Do you prefer?

I've been doing all the minor stuff to my bike with basic knowledge from working on everything growing up, but now I would like to have a service manual to dig deeper.

I have found that HD has their own available at the dealer. I have also found Hayes and Clymer make manuals for these bikes.

The problem is I do not have access the books to compare them. Do I go with HD and pay more simply because the built the bike or are the other books as good, if not better?

In the auto world, I have used Hayes books and found others to be easier to follow with more pics and diagrams to help unclear muddy water.

So whick book do you use and can anyone compare multiple books to help me a not so blind purchase?

Thanks.

I have both and they both come in handy. If i could only have one it would be the HD.

I just bought the HD service manual. I can't imagine anything would be as detailed. It looks like a Webster's Dictionary.

Having owned all of them over the years I suggest you start with the factory service manual. Also get the parts book. The other brand books are very general, do not cover every variation of model or detail and are often plain out of touch. I no longer bother with them. If your bike is well covered by them that is chance, you may equally find much of your particular bike is simply not covered. The correct HD books will cover your bike to the smallest screw and rivet.

The HD service manual is a must. Also consider getting the parts manual from HD. It helps if you're doing a lot of work along the lines of taking parts off and what not. Lots of pictures!
