I've read that the rocker box covers, or rather their gaskets, are susceptible to leaking over time or if the bike is not properly warmed up before a long ride. The bike is performing well and I haven't noticed any major loss of oil so I wasn't worrying. I also had the bike in for service somewhat recently and they didn't mention it being a red flag or anything needing attention - though not sure I trust them to. I am asking this now because I only have about 3 or 4 months left on the warranty and if this sort of thing is covered (another question I had) I'd like to take it in. But only if this is considered an oil leak. I've talked to an HD mechanic about a similar looking oil stain around the primary cover/bottom of the engine and he made it sound like seeping, all around the engine, is normal after long rides or on rides in the desert/in high temps (where I live). Bike has 17,000 miles on it. Any input much appreciated, thanks.
You could talk with another shop that you like to decide if you wish to the gaskets changed before your warranty expires.
Yes, rocker gaskets are typically covered.
I think the gasket cost if near $100.
From your pictures I wouldn't worry about riding the bike.
Yeah i wouldl not worry about that. I have had the front gasket go twice and the rear one once by 17k. If they start to leak again I'm going to just clean the oil off and keep an eye on the oil level unless they get bad.
Cause it just looks filthy!
For gawd sake, wash yo ****! ;D
Seriously though, if you're still under warranty and you're concerned about the gaskets leaking oil and you don't trust your regular dealer, take it to another dealer, explain your situation and have them look at it!
Good luck.
I was wondering about this too. My bike doesn't even have 2000 miles and they don't look that bad but they look "damp" I guess you could say. No physical oil showing or anything but the metal almost has a "wet" look to it kinda. It's hard to explain.
I got a 3 year warranty so I'm not too concerned about it. Just gonna have to keep an eye on it I guess.
