New fob battery, will start with code, does not recognize fob

The one with the issue is a 2012 1200 custom so it's a proximity. I'm gonna call the dealership before I take about an hour away only to be told they need to order parts or something. What is the deal with the push button? My 2004 sporty has a push button but I've only had it a few months and the guy I bought it from wasn't very tech savvy (hence the rat nest of wiring that he replaced the original harness with).

Reprogram FOB
I know that the key fob's can reprogrammed if need be by hand. I use to work at the HD dealership and there were a couple of times that the tech's had to walk someone through reprogramming a fob over the phone. Both of ours went dead, after we get new batteries I was wondering if someone could tell me the steps to program them again just in case they aren't recognized (I lost my cheat sheet on this procedure). Would have to travel an hour to get them reprogrammed at a dealership cause we won't go any where near our local one. They are proximity fobs for 2008 X, not push button. Thank you.
