Default Light Fuse Keeps Blowing

I have a 2009 Iron 883 and the main "lights" fuse keeps blowing. If I replace the fuse and then turn the lights on, I typically get approximately 30 seconds before it'll go out again. I've tried replacing the headlight bulb and made sure there weren't any exposed or pinched wires in the headlight assembly. Still can't figure this out though. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas for how to diagnose or fix this?

FYI - I haven't made any repairs or put on any new additions recently. Also, the front and rear turn signals still work, but the running lights don't.

You need to get yourself a manual with some schematics and a multimeter and trace down the short. that is the only thing that will cause the fuse to blow. I am a helicopter Electrician by trade, shoot the wires to ground and to each other, unless its a ground wire which you should get about .2 ohms or so, the meter should say O.L.

I had this issue before. It was under the seat. I installed the fender stop light and some wires were touching. Check inside the fender and see if any cables are rubbing against the tire. I hope its not too hard to find. Can you describe any electrical work you may have done?

Have you done any modifications to the bike at all, even in the past?

running lights, headlamp = lights fuse
turn signals, brake light, horn = accessories fuse

Thank you for the help.

Hitman, I'll check under the seat and fender today to see if I can see anything. Hopefully this will be the problem.

To follow up the other questions, I've recently installed a new exhaust and earlier this winter I put in a connector for heated gloves. Those are the only modifications I've made in the past year.

Odds are you have a bad dual lamp in the turn signals / running lights. Often one of the filaments breaks internally and shorts to the other filament or to ground. Take out all 4 bulbs and see if that stops the issue.

The other lighting issue it might be is the wire(s) going into the fixture will rub on the edge of the case and wear through the wiring insulation.

Hopefully it's only a bad bulb.

I had this issue, and it was due to my front turn signals.... so i cut them off.

Thanks for all of the help. I was finally able to figure it out. The wires from the left tail light were pinched (and then became exposed) right where the seat attaches to the body. I taped them up and it resolved the issue.
