I was thinking about buying a Engine Guard Kit-49060-04. The directions state to tighten to 25 - 35 lbs. Is it really necessary to get it tightened that exactly? I don't have a torque wrench and I would like to avoid the expense of buying one to tighten four bolts.
it's a good thing to have, but you can guesstimate it on lyour own, if you using a 6" long wrench, then put about 50# of force on it, 50x 0.5 feet = 25 foot pounds. I think you can get a cheap flex type torque wrench for about $18 at autozone.
Just use a normal sized wrench, or 3/8" drive socket set and don't pretend to be a gorilla! Most torque figures simply translate to sensible levels of tightening with the correct wrench, the only exceptions being either delicate things or very critical ones.
Save yourself even more money, don't install an engine guard. They look goofy on a Sportster IMO.

I used to think that too, but tastes change, you have to see one in person, I have one now, the mustache bar from Harley looks really good.. it's smaller for the sportster,, plus then you can add highway pegs.
