Default Rolling Thunder is 30 Years Old

Anyone headed north for this event. Having lived in that area for 50 years, have rode it several times. Cant believe its 30 Years old. If you ever get the chance to participate in the ride, its a must do....at least once.

The wife and I and the bike will be taking the Autotrain from Florida to Virginia next Wednesday the 24th. Staying in MD for a few days doing the Rolling Thunder then taking the Blue Ridge Parkway south to NC and play for a few weeks. Can't wait.

I took the bike on the train a couple summers ago and rode home, it was a great trip. Have fun.

Just a tip, bring some microfiber cloths to put between the bike and the Amtrak straps. Although they strap it to the pallet I did pad out where the straps touched the paint or chrome. Take a small plastic bag with your night things onto the train for the journey, you cannot get to your bike but you have zero space for much else either in a cabin or in the seats.

Sounds like an awesome trip. We did the autotrain 2 years ago and will do it again. We had one of the small cabins. I recommend taking ear plugs, it can be noisy at night. We carry an overnight bag on the top pak and keep extra clothes in the saddle bags. We just took out overnight bag onto the train with us. We packed a few snacks and a couple bottles of water.

+1 on taking small towels to use for the padding. They did a good job strapping my bike down, but I wanted some extra protection.

I want to do Rolling Thunder and Run For the Wall someday, just have to fit it into the schedule.

Trucked the bike up and stayed at a hotel.......just outside Manassas Battlefield. Was able to ride into DC....and
out towards the Shenandoah..was perfect. Was outside the beltway, but you do not want to be TOO close.
I would look forward to doing it again...but once staged at the Pentagon parking lot...read slowly.."Have patience."
Think of the Viet nam prisoner....day after day.....in a damp rat hole. Next day he wakes up......he is in the same hole.
YOU! In the Pentagon parking lot!....two hours later you are riding into our nations capital..thousands cheering you along the route So,
BE PATIENT.
I want to do it again.

good tip, and snacks, there's a wait between loading the bike and getting on the train, the store at the station is very expensive, like $6 for a crappy ham sandwich. Bring a book too there's only so much looking out the window you can do. You can charge your phone on the train.
