The helmets today come with retractable visors, bluetooth ect.
This one has the rear crank like a construction helmet so you can
tighten the 1/2 down so they don't strangle you like the older ones had at higher speeds.
In post number 8. I showed my crashed bike and helmet. because I got up and walked away. My friend ,that was following me called my wife she was on couple miles away. She came, by then bike was loaded on tow truck we all went to the Harley dealer. While they unloaded my bike totaled 2017. I purchased a new one. Had to wait for it to be delivered. . Wife and granddaughter picked the color. Then we all went to dinner. No helmet it would not have gone so smooth. The 18th of Jan the sidecar goes in to be painted to match and goes on the new one in February.
Insurance company also purchased a new helmet. Offer to replace my jack but I wanted to keep it. What could have been a very bad day turned out ok.
The choice is always yours unless the law requires it, even then a choice if you don't mind the consequences.
I believe there is a sliding scale in terms of accident preparation and accident avoidance. I don't want to **** anybody off but I will state my opinion. The more gear I pack on, the less capable I begin to feel in my operating skills. This is really noticeable when I put a full-face helmet on, I really feel a loss of situation awareness (peripheral vision, hearing ability). I end up taking longer to make riding decisions, hesitating between lane changes, etc. I'm usually riding with a few other guys, and if I have the full-face on it really becomes much more difficult to determine their positions in relation to mine.
With all that being said, I value comfort over physical protection (within reason) in order to operate at your fullest capacity. I'm not going out riding in friggin flip-flops or anything bizarre like that. If the weather is comfortable and warm, I'm usually in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Let's not forgot why we are out on the "freedom-machines".
I've been riding since 1970... The only reason I'm alive and still riding today is because I always wear a helmet. If you choose to wear a headband instead of a helmet, is no concern to me what so ever. The Shoei Neotec 2 is the best modular Helmet ever made. There is almost zero wind noise, it's waterproof, has a built in sunscreen, has plenty of ventilation, and it's blue tooth compatible.
I won't ride without one - full face as well. Not mandatory that we wear one in my state. Also believe - personal choice - if you want to go sans lid - go ahead.
That said - I've been in 2 street accidents, happy for helmet both times. I've been in countless dirt accidents - helmet every time.
Even if it wasn't about my brain pan - the bug protection would be enough for me too. I live on Lake Michigan and the bugs can be so bad, you have to downshift to drive through them.
My state don't require helmets. Most of the time I use one, sometimes when its hot out I will ride without. Yes the wind feels good, I feel like i am ridding nude without a helmet.
In Cali we went to mandatory helmet law a long time ago. We do have nearby states where its a choice. 👍
Ive been on mc's since the late 70s and mcs are my street going main transportation since late 80s. 99.9 % of the time I wear top of the line full face helmets. Safety aside, I like to ride fast and nothing sucks more than having your face blasted at high speeds. Skin flapping, eyes watering, screw that.... BUT I feel it should be a choice. Plenty of times crawling around beach traffic where I wouldnt wear a helmet. Speeds where youre gonna hurt an ankle before the head if you tipped.
I respect all those that " choose " to wear. I just wish in Canada we had the " choice ".
We now have to wear seat belt's. what's next...no smoking in the car or on a bike.
I hear about bug's,...having a helmet saved some,...but when a bug or bee or a cigarette butt from the driver ahead gets into your helmet, then what.
Choice is what I want, not dictatorship. But that's me. When I ride, I ride free, and I leave
all the crap behind, well, at least I try to.
always along with leather jacket, boots gloves.....as far as seatbelts are concerned......i worked with a widowed lady who ended up hating her deceased husband as he always said no one is gonna make me wear a seat belt..........she said she watched him go straight through the front windsceen of their car when they had an accident and landed fair square on his head....and she had to raise the kids on her own.
R and C because you live in Canada (as do I) you have free health care so the government does not want to pay for your head injuries or reconstruction of your noodle. Therefore they dictate the rules. I lived in Texas for three years where helmets are optional. I usually wore my helmet but if I was on a FM road with little traffic I at times enjoyed the freedom of not wearing one. It's glorious if you can safely get away with it on a hot Texas day.
