Default Helmets or Not

Here in Canada we are obliged to wear helmet's.
Is it true in the US that you have the option of to wear or not?
I've seen movie's...lol, where they don't wear helmet's...
Just curious, and what your thought's are on this.
Personally, if I was going around the corner etc, I don't see where a helmet is necessary, but...I guess it's just personal choice, i don't know.
I wish I could ride without or with, but that option is not available to me.

Some states are helmet states and some aren't. We appreciate the choice over a mandate. Do what makes you feel comfortable if your in an area that allows for it. I ride without most times except when on trips through states that require them.

We always had a mandatory helmet law in my state, so it was not big deal wearing one.

Interesting comment UL, I live life day by day now that my Sweetheart has passed.
I would like to know what " you" think on this.
Here's a story of a good friend of mine riding his HD....( keep in mind, this is Canada)
He is following a car, the car slows, WHY....
Because the car in front is making a left turn.
Buddy doesn't know and passes, as the second car turns left, he hit's it broad side.
He dies at the the scene, he is wearing a helmet, but because his head blew up, they had to cut the helmet off him.
So, my point or discussion is, is it better or not.

Not Uncle Larry but IMO helmets offer protection against certain head injuries but as you noted helmet or not when it your time.....
I have been in 2 major accidents in the past 6 years. First was a lady left of center and I t-boned her. Totaled her SUV. Only broken bones from that one. The other I was hit head on with a Ford f250 powerstroke diesel. No broken bones only a mild concussion. No helmet in either.

Helmets do protect your head and I would be wrong to say they don't help in certain situations but blunt force trauma to the head helmet or not is no guarantee that you will survive any accident.

So, lots depend on many factors, speed, type of helmet, road conditions, etc. Personally, that sounds like bad judgement on the passing and looking ahead to me. Sorry for the loss of your pal.

Each state decides on helmets or not and age restrictions. I am a 100% your call to wear or not. As for me and this house we wear them. Last Saturday Totaled a 2017 RGU. Chaps, Boots. armor insert vest glove helmet . Walked away from it. Not so much as a Aspirin. Ice pack on foot for a bit at home. The marks on helmet are not dirt. That is Asphalt and gravel. As always your call IMO. I had one small scratch on my nose from glasses.
I was just going up the road to gas up and out it away.

Your friend didn't die from the helmet, he died because he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. You cannot take anything for granted while riding. I also live in Ontario and have ridden my whole life. My wife and I visit family in Florida twice a year and I often rent a bike while there, I still wear a helmet while riding down south. I am just used to it, and feel uncomfortable without it.

For every scenario there is bound to be hindsight ( Optical Rectumitis ) that would offer up a "Could Have, Would Have or Should Have" ... I got it hard when I was young ... a gal made a Right Turn from the Left Turn lane into a driveway which was just before the street I was going to turn down ( Mind you I was in a Right Turn Lane ) I got caught between her and the scooter ... Spent 30 days in the hospital ( most in traction ) ... What did I learn? You cannot account for (all ) the actions of those around you ... Keep your head on a swivel ( as Harfar mentioned ) and wear the helmet if it suits your mindset ... Sorry for the loss of your friend :<(
