Default charging system question

I just bought my wife a Gerbings heated jacket liner and the instructions say that it draws 55 watts. My question is: How many watts does the charging system on my Road King Custom put out?

if memory serves me I think the civilian bikes put out 35 amps, that has to run the lights, FI, ignition, etc.

55 watts is about 4 to 5 amps depending on voltage

the normal stock alt. is 32amps and the conversion for amps is watts/amps so at 55 watts with just 12volts = 4.58333333 amps

I've been running the Gerbing full sleeve jacket liner on my 06 SG and my 01 Triumph Sprint for years with no problems. The Triumph's system puts out 40 amps, and I'm not sure about the SG but I think I remember reading that starting in 06 all of harley's touring models had beefed up alternators and put out up to 50 amps. Either way it hasn't been a problem for me - on the Triumph I usually have the heated grips cranked too when I have the jacket on. One thing I always do is turn the jacket off when I'm stopped at a light. I don't use a thermostat - just a simple on/off rocker switch.

You will be fine. Youbikes 32 ampcharging system puts out about 384 watts I run two jacket liners, one pair of gloves and driving lights, which you don't have. I have no problems.

I have a voltage meter on my bike that I use to monitor my charging system. It may drop out of the green with everything on while sitting still. If so, I just cut off the driving lights, which frees up 60 watts.

I run my jacket liner on my Ironhead with it's 19 amp generator. It does just fine if you use it smartly.

What year is the Road King? In 06 the Touring Bikes all got "New High Output Charging System (all models) • Three-phase 50 amp charging system OE • Consists of a new stator, rotor, and regulator". In any case the heated gear will not tax your charging system, provided it is healthy.
