and that's pretty much the short and long of it. You do this from the right side of the bike so you can observe the pushrods. When the intake side has closed, you're on base circle. You can double check tdc with a chopstick inserted into the sparkplug hole. Rotate the wheel back and forth a couple of inches, using the chopstick to feel how close the piston is to tdc if you like.
You most certainly do not need a dial indicator or any other measuring device to determine tdc, just your eyeballs, and a basic understanding of how your valve timing works.
