Default 18" apes on road glide ???'s

I will be putting 18" apes on a road glide and they are set up for internal wiring. They came with a set of wires to redo the factory wiring. I know that the proper way would be to pull the contacts out of the deutsch connectors and then put new contacts on the new wiring and so on. However, those little contacts would cost $.60 each and I would need I think 48 of them as thereis a 12 point connector for each side and then the other ends in the fairing. Wouldit be easier to just splice the wiring, solder, heat shrink, etc.where the wiring will be inside the handlebars? Or if I do this, should I make it to the wiring in the fairing so if there is a problem it will be easier to get to? Thoughts, experiences? Thanks.

Dawg - I have never done this, but I have read that it is best to cut and splice the wiring that will go through the bars. It is important to stagger the solder joints to make it easier to fish through the bars. Good luck, should be pretty straight forward..... all except why someone would put 18" apes on a Road Glide?

I cut, spliced, soldered, and heat shrinked mine to go through the 18's for my RK. As was already stated just make sure you stagger the splices. Kept the splices in the bars themselves.Easy to do...

Hey DAWG, how tall is your buddy? I am 6'1' and am adding 18" bars, I am having them installed as I don't have any buddies that could help me out, and I was affraid of attempting it myself and getting stuck half way through. Now that my bike is away, I am wondering if 18" is too much. Either way, I have to live with it. The wife wanted me to do 16", and if the 18" s are to tall for me, she wouldn't let me hear the end of it. Guess I am having a case of buyers remorse. I don't know.

Those bars will certainly sacrifice handling for "LOOKS"...
