As others have said, you might be mis-informed on this. I use the USB power port in my previous post and my iPhone 5 can charge from 15% to 100% in about an hour and a half using the Apple supplied lightning cord. All USB power sources are pretty much standard nowadays. Just depends on how much amps it puts out.

If you feel more comfy using another power source, then follow mkguitar's method.

Don at 3brpowersports was a great help in selecting the best route (no pun intended. He was also able to explain why most aftermarket USB chargers don't work with newer Apple products - it has something to do with how the phone recognizes ports (I am not doing the explaation any justice). The short of it is that the wire mentioned above works to charge iPhones.
Thank you everyone for your guidance and input!
Cheers,
Rudy

the lightning cable has a chip in it- look for "MFI-Certified".

on my FLHTC I use an isimple charger, audio interface with my radio.
It has a 30 pin connector for the old ipod, 4S etc.
when i got a new iphone I got the apple MFI 30 pin to lightning adapter ( cheep online)

that how I do...and my power is from the position light wiring

on my other 12 volt bikes I wire a simple 12 volt to usb power adapter and then lightning cable to phone

Good thread and we have several options to power USB devices.

My question,
Does the accessory switch on the dash or nacelle control power to the outlet under the seat. In other words, can I turn power on and off to a USB port wired to the under seat outlet. I only need power for a GPS and only use it when traveling.

yes.

on most models the acc plug has a ground pin...an acc pin ( switched), a run light pin and a brake light pin.

I have posted the pin out previously ( and never can remember without looking it up...)

so you could have switched power, power on with the bike, or power with the brake

Apple has become as much of an tyrannical empire as Microsoft (if not more).

I would need to run an iPhone lightning cable with lighter adapter directly to the accessory outlet. So I guess I have the answer to my question. Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. Now I just need to decide upon speakers. J&M Handlebar Mounted?
That's generally only with the iPhone 5, and then only in a few respective iOS updates; but regardless, it doesn't keep you from charging permanently. Closing the pop up notification regarding aftermarket chargers a few times will bypass it and allow the phone to charge.

+1 on the 3BR USB. It makes what you need to charge much more versatile.

I also attached a pic that shows the pin out of the deutsch connector under the seat in case you wanted to wire up your own connector. The pic matched up to my 2006 FLHR. Don't know if has been changed in newer models.
