Just curious what would happen besides a fine, if you get pulled over with a novelty helmet. Would they let you ride away after giving you a ticket, or make you get a DOT helmet before leaving. I say this because I have ordered 4 different helmets in the largest sizes (up to 4xl) and none fit, so I found a novelty helmet that fits. And I don't need a helmet lecture from anyone, I understand those risks.
My youngest brother, who lives in Tennessee, was pulled over and ticketed at a stop light. I believe they let him ride home and he still wears a "novelty" helmet in protest. Florida doesn't have a helmet law but I wear one anyways...to each his own.
Depends on the Trooper. Helmet, license, registration---- have enough money to call a wrecker, just in case.
Several years ago, they actually put 1 in front of me and 1 behind me and escorted me to jail. I had to pay fines before the bike and I were released and had to truck the bike away.
I'm going to Nevada and California in March. I suppose I could find room in the bottom of my T-bag for a DOT helmet that doesn't fit perfect in case I get pulled over. Or pull the lining out of one of the DOT helmets and grind it to fit my melon then relign it.
I would say it depends on the cop. I think the penalties could vary widely state to state. Kinda funny in Kansas we have no helmet law but I rarely see anyone riding without one.
I've been with riders that received tickets for the skid lid with the fake DOT sticker, there's a big addition to the fine for having the fake sticker. Those riders where made to park there bikes until a rider with a DOT/snell helmet was available. We just happened to have bikes with extra helmet's since it was a larger group of riders.
Not sure of anyone that makes a helmet bigger than 4x? Good luck with your search OP.
Most check points or officers that ask about helmets most likely know the DOT/SNELL standard before they look at your helmet and probably ride them selves.
I use to ride with a skid lid all the time and have always been a supporter of riders being able to make there own choice to wear or not wear. Now I have an Akoury AK-88 and love it, don't even know its there most of the time. But I think XLG is the biggest they go
