Harley is letting me down
Rebyl.... If I may be so bold as to offer a little constructive criticism.
Your original post came across poorly. As mentioned above, it sounded like a temper tantrum by a spoiled child..... It tends to turn off people otherwise willing to help.. makes it seem like no matter what they say, you'll continue your tantrum if it's not what you want to hear.
It has been my experience (yes, I've made a couple ranting posts on various forums that didn't go over well) that if you dispassionately state your issue... you will get far more meaningful posts, from people truly trying to help.
Just an FWIW... hope you get your bike fixed soon and can get back to riding...
You will always get some unrelated/silly responses to anything posted on a public forum.... however.....

I laid mine Dyna down and needed a new tank from Harley and it took every bit of three months to get it back. Kind of sucked being that it went in to the shop at the beginning of summer. I Really had the itch to ride by the time i got the Dyna back i was running out of room for during that time i picked up two more bikes.

Also, I toured the HD plant in York, PA last summer. It was upgraded not too long ago. They don't make RK's there, but I saw the process for Softails, Trikes and some CVO's. An earlier poster was correct. Every component (at least the metal ones) are made to order. So when I ordered the tank, they had to add 1 to the manufacturing queue and tag it to be painted for me. No, it doesn't take 3 months to mold and weld and paint a tank. But the factory has a build plan that they work to. And repair/special orders like this have to be worked into their existing manufacturing schedule. So special parts probably start at the very beginning - with a work order and raw materials. Only if you're lucky enough to need something they happen to have an excess of (and with lean manufacturing an minimal factory inventory, that's unlikely) would you get a faster turn-around.
Sorry for the delay, but your time period sounds pretty normal. I suppose you could have ordered an after-market replacement. That would have been cheaper and faster...
Me too. A couple years ago I had a Sporty and went high side (don't ask). Needed a new gas tank in the two-tone "Jake and Elwood" blue. Awesome color scheme, by the way. That took about 3 months to get.

Just got word a couple of days ago that the fender has arrived and the dealer is putting the RK back together next week. I don't think the hard bag has arrived yest but that's OK as I have a set of Leather bags I got from Iron Bags that look cool on the bike. Still some Summer left and Autumn is nice to ride here so looking forward to some nice days....just need to watch out for Tourists, we have had so many bad accidents here this year, a lot of visitors have been killed it has got so bad even the Government is looking at ways to improve things, guess I was lucky it was just the bike and not me
Best reply so far IMHO lol
I do pity you guys that can only ride for a few months, it must suck, but man what an amazing country for riding. We ride all year down here, so long as you don't mind a bit of cold wet rain sometimes....
Your insurance says new part, not painted. You may have been able to save time ordering a raw part and painting it. I did this last year when I wanted a 2014 tourpak in time for Sturgis. Painted it was 8 wks out. Raw 2-3. And this was vivid black! Got it, had it painted, cost more than it would have painted from the factory. Went to Sturgis.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and fall. Ride Safe! And watch out for those damn tourist. I assume you New Zealanders drive on the left. I'm sure that those of us that have driven on the right all our lives might have a problem with that. And I'm not saying the tourist was from the US. If driving in Oregon & Washington is any indicator, they were probably Asian!
