Default Tranny seals

I have an oil leak either from the primary cover and/or the tranny main shaft.

My question is do you have to totally disassemble the tranny to change out the seal for the main shaft or can it be pulled without a total tear down?

I have removed seals by almost every imaginable way possible, just trying to plan this out so I won't be down longer than I need to be.

Thanks

You need to pull the primary. Both the main shaft seal and the inner primary bearing seal can be changed without touching the trans.

Just did mine. Not a bad job. Might want to consider replacing main shaft bearing also while you have your inner primary off.

Man, I was thinking about that one while looking for the leak!

I saw it done on a video with chimp mechanics, and the penguin walking in covered with melted vanilla ice cream cone...

Funny stuff!

Did you replace the seals on the TRANSMISSION (for the smart-asses) or just the primary case?

Spend the money & get yourself a HD Service Manual. Good luck.

I didn't leave the dealer without it back in '08 when I got the bike. Manuals are good to a point, but they tend to over complicate things. The book tells you how to dismantle the tranny which from past experience isn't always necessary just to replace a case seal.

While I had the inner primary off I replaced shifter shaft seal, starter jackshaft seal, and transmission mainshaft bearing and seal. Mine is a 2003 FLHTC with 74000 and thought I would get them all while I was in there,
