I didn't like it at first, but now, I don't think I'd go too far with out it. I got the compact king ( I THINK) from the HD catalog. It just helps to knock down the wind a little and help keep my eyes dry. But, I don't care for the wind buffeting up and blowing my shirt all over the place, but that's really my only comlaint. Main thing to remember is they are very easily detachable, and you can always sell it.
My 06 had one on it when bought it.Guess its ok but not my thing rode about 200 miles and gave to buddy who was winning about wanting one.I rode 6300 mile trip last year with three freinds who had full fairings and keep hearing about how I would by one before we got home.until about 5500 miles of it then finaly they shut up about it.
For me the wind is part of the ride I like. Then agaian Ive been called lots of things but never normal its so boring!
i've got the small hd small shield on my 07 custom. its not very noticeable, and works great for me. but then again, i'm only 5'4" so if you're taller, the small shield might not do it for you.
WhenI bought my '05 rk custom, it had the sheild already on it. It is the standard sheild found on any rk and is very easy to take on and off. I leave it off for around town, but whenI knowI will be doing 80 mph for a hundred or more miles, I slap it on. I have a 64" chest, and without the sheild, I find myself having to really hold on to the bars. When the sheild is on, it is much less fatiguing (sp?). Some hate the sheild, others wont do without it. The beauty of the detachable is, you can be both.
i dont think that is the standard shield, that sucker is huge! i could ride behind that and never even feel the breeze when we bought the wife's bike, she wanted the shorty shield like mine, but they didn't have it so they gave her the 'tall boy' to use until the short one came in then they would change the lexan over. it looked like the same shield you have there. she's not particularly short, but she would have to stand on the footboards to see over the top.
It is huge, at least that is what the wife says.As far as the sheild goes, I thinkI measured it once and it was 19-20 inches high. I am too lazy to go down to the garage to check. I know the bars are 18", I have checked that a few times, and looking at my bike picture, taking the fact that the sheild is a bit higher placement on the bike, I would say 19" is about right. Think the tallest I have seen is 21". Whatever the height, I love it. Works well for me and does the job nicely.
