Default First overnight road trip: The Dragon

Took my first overnight road trip with a friend of mine Newt, to ride the "Tail of the Dragon" We left out Tuesday morning about 10am and rode down. (note: Newt is an ol Vietnam Veteran and I think he may have the early stages of Alzheimer) Despite me showing we could save some time and distance by going south to I74 and over to I75 Newt insisted we go through Dayton, Oh by way of I70. Had stop and go traffic through Dayton and through Cincinnati the rest was smooth sailing. Stopped at Waffle House for lunch/dinner. Took us a bit longer than I'd like but we made Pigeon Forge, Tn about midnight. About another hour to find a decent priced Hotel. Newt's friend that would have given us a great rate or even a free room didnt work out. The Hotel that his friend managed was no longer there. O'well just 80.00 for one night. o.O
Next morning we got up a bit late and had to find a Harley Dealership. My low beam was out and needed to get a replacement. Smokey Mountain HD in Pigeon Forge was small but nice place. Everyone was polite and willing to help. I opted for the upgraded headlight bulb 30.00 as opposed to 15.00 for stock. Took some pics and checked out a windshield bag. I wanted it to match my saddle bags and splurged for the Road King Classic emblem and basket weave. Really nice looking and it should be for the 110.00 I paid for it. Called the wife to let her know we were ok and up and going. She must have been checking the accounts online at the time because she didnt sound too happy lol. "30.00 for a bulb"? and "whats this 110.00 charge for"? I played stupid and told her I didnt know what that charge was for... I did eventually tell her it was for a bag. Hey we allocated 500.00 for this trip and I was keeping count. Roughly
Rode over to Maryville, Tn and onto the Dragon. We passed through the "Foothills Parkway" really enjoyable ride. Took some pics and spent a bit of time enjoying the scenery.
Enter the Dragon:
No time to enjoy the view. Attention is firmly on the curves and the idiots trying to run me over... One care was tailgating me about a distance of less than 6 or 8 feet. About halfway through I found a spot to pull off and let them pass. A Holes.
The first two switchbacks were posted 20mph I tried 25-27. Thankfully no one was coming the other way as I crossed the line a bit. I started to take those signs seriously and slowed down to 20 on them. Pissed a few people off as they wanted to push the envelope I guess.
I survived and didnt lay it down so all is good.
Took a few pics around Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort. Lots of souvenirs and not as pricey as I would have thought. Bought a T-shirt, key chain, a couple of poker chips and a few other little items to give out when I got back home.
We left and headed back the way we came and used a pull out for some more pics. Almost got squished by a Greyhound type bus coming around a tight curve. Such large vehicles should not be allowed on that stretch. At leas they banned tractor trailers over 30ft.
Had the wife find us a better rate hotel that what we had the previous night. 50.00 was about the best that could be done without prior reservations.
The trip home was how should I say frustrating?
We came up on I 40 and for some reason Newt turned too soon. We ended up a bit lost out in the hills and needed directions to get back.. Ok, minor detour. Headed West towards Knoxville, Tn. Newt seems to be confused and did not take I 640 loop back as we did coming down. Ok, I thought that perhaps he wanted to go through to I 275. We pass it... "Ok, where the hell you going Newt"? He then takes I 640 back east to I 275. I pull up next to him and yell at him "where are you going"? We eventually came to I 75 North and then he looked for a gas station to stop at. Late to signal for the exit I had to cut a car off to take the exit.
Stopped I ask him if he was lost or trying to get me killed. "Neither". My leg is hurting bad" "I have been this way ten thousand times" he said. Really? I thought. Back on the road we came up to Lexington, Ky. I 75 merges with I 64 and we got a few vehicles between us as people like to play what I call "Whats my Lane"? as they switch lanes back and forth as if they are lost. I could see Newt was in the right lane for the I 75 split. I jumped onto I 75 and didnt see him anymore. Caught a glimpse of him, he is still on I 64 headed west... I find the next exit and pull off onto the side of the on ramp to wait for him to turn around and come back or perhaps to look for me.
I waited in the sun for about an hour and half calling him every few minuets and even texting him.
Finally he sends me a text asking me where I was. I told him I 75 exit 120 waiting for him. Turns out, he realized he went the wrong way, took a highway though Lexington and cut back to I 75 and kept going leaving me behind. He was almost to Ohio........ agrrrrr
I catch up and meet him asking why he did not come back when he realized he went the wrong way he said he figured I would keep going and he wanted to catch up. Now I really like Newt, consider his like a brother but this was really testing my patience.
Back on the road I tried to play keep up as Newt cut cars off speed up to 80 and slowed down as much as 50 we hit some rain. At a refuel spot I called the wife and asked for a weather report. The heavy stuff was in Indianapolis, headed east. We could get to hwy 35 in Indiana if we go quickly. He asked me which way I was going back, I told him Hwy 35 North through Richmond, In through Muncie, In.
We didnt have any issues getting back to I 70 west till we got close to the Indiana Ohio line. The rain was light and Newt was playing with Semi's. Rocketing past them and the cutting them off and slowing down. Being a retired trucker I can imagine what they were saying on the radio.
Hwy 35 North was the next exit and Newt signaled that he was taking it. After he moved over to the ramp he quickly cut back onto I 70. I didnt, I stayed on 35. Figuring he didnt say which way back he was going I stayed on course avoiding the heavy rains headed this way. I could see lots and lots of lighting to the west.
I stopped for a sandwich and took my dinner pill. I thought I had better send him a message, just in case. I did stop in each small town to check the phone to see if he called or text but had no signal till I was in Muncie, In. About an hour from where I last seen him. In Muncie I check and had no calls so I sent him another telling him were I was asking if he was ok.
I rode another 45min or so and stopped in Marion, In. I had a text and voicemail from Newt. He asked if I was still in Muncie and I text "no I am in Marion". I asked him where he was and he said he was still in Richmond, In!! He said he came back to look for me and was getting drenched. "sigh" I said "Once again were not on the same page" "I thought you would have kept going taking another route".. I asked if he needed me to come back for him he said no that he would talk to me tomorrow.
Well the rest of the ride was uneventful and rain free.
Called him the next day to make sure he made it home safe. He did, we talked awhile and both glad to be home.

Sounds like a frustrating ride home. I agree with the others. Newt has a very good friend.

I used to have a friend like that. I'm not sure where he ended up, but I know where we were when I threw him in the ocean.

You r a good friend for sure, and nice pics BTW. I was in Gatlinberg from 7/13-7/16 road a lot of the same roads u guys had ride on . Great riding for sure, and felt pretty good @ Deal's Gap...I only missed one curve on the Dragon, and was thankful that no traffic was coming from the other direction...my wife was not impressed with that moment, as she said something like 'slow this SOB down' but we made it with no issues. Ended up in Ashville,NC for a couple more days and rode the Blue Ridge...very nice also. Being from the flatland of Iowa...I pretty much have had my fill of sharp corners and tunnels..

I'm leaving this Saturday for another trip to the Dragon area. Was there May 2014 for a few days are really enjoyed it. I never worried about making the corners and staying in my lane too much, I was MUCH more concerned with the hot dog rice rocket riders that have way more bike then they can handle coming into MY lane on the corners. We will do all the great roads again. Moonsine 28, Rt 129, the Skyway and the Parkway. Stayin at the Cherokee Indian Reservation this time, stayed in Maggie Valley last time.
