Default Power Commander versus Fuel-Pak

My 2007 Road King will be here in 2 weeks and I need some advice. I already plan on having the dealer install the Screaming Eagle air cleaner, V&H True Duals and V&H Oval Mufflers before I pick it up. I talked with the dealer about installing the V&H Fuel Pak. I've been reading several posts here and looking at the web sites to study theoptions, but, I need to make a decision soon. I like the idea of getting the numbers from V&H and not needing a computer to setup the Fuel-Pak. The dealer is pushing the Power Commander as a better alternative. They are also recommending a Custom Map at 1000 miles at a cost of $250. The Power Commander has some control over engine timing and would seem to eliminate the need to buy an aftermarket ignition.

I am a little concerned about buying the Power Commander and being locked into having the dealer do another custom map if a change is made. I'm not planning any other changes anytime soon.

Would appreciate any experience from others on which way to go.

Andy

Hey Andy do a search on both here there is alot of good info!
I was concerned about the PC and the start up delay so I went with the fuel pak and really like it.
But I'm no pro I just wanted something to help with the lean\heat issue and alow me to open up the Air flow too. I don't plan on doing more to the motor anythie soon either.

If all your going to do is pipes and air flow, for the money, go with the fuelpak, If yuor ever going to do engine mods, you will need the PC so you can dyno. I have about 1000 miles now with the pak and love the way it runs. 2 bills vs. close to 5 bills, with the pc and download. (????) my 2 cents.

You'll have alot more tunable options down the road with a PCIII.

I think for the extra $100 you're better off with the PCIII.

I got good results with Rineharts, PCIII and a Green HP filter. Ended up with 73hp and 81ft/lb of torque out of the 88ci.

Next week my SE goes in

I to went with the Fuelpak and like it but I only have 100 miles on it. If you do not plan to go into the engine then you are safe with the Fuelpak. The FP uses the existing o2 sensors unlike the PCIII and SERT and is super easy to install.

I opted for the PCIII because of its tunability, and if you do it right you aren't locked into continue dyno tunes every time you make a change. Think about backing off on your plan to buy the mufflers and SEAC from your dealer. In the first place, the SEAC is not cleanable, and if you want that feature you should purchase either a K&N or Ness Big Sucker.

Another plan would be to call Jamie at Fuel Moto (www.fuelmotousa.com) and purchase the entire package from them. Doing so will land you a canned map, created from a real dyno tune on an exact configuration, that is flashed into the PCIII's EPROM before you get it. A pleasant side-effect is that the package will likely be much cheaper than the price your dealer will sell it to you for. You can load the PCIII software on your computer and do tweaks of your own to the cruise range for better gas mileage, like I did, if you're so inclined.

Some say a custom dyno tune with DJ's Tuning Link software produces a better effect, but I can't imagine this bike running better this close to stock form. If you do go with the PCIII and have your dealer do the custom tune, make sure they have the Tuning Link software, as many don't, and if not I wouldn't do it.

First thing, there is no aftermarket ignition, its EFI, that is all controlled in the ECM. If these are the extent of your mods fuel pak will do fine. Another plus, no 3-4 second delay in the engine starting that you WILL have with the PCIII and you dont block of the 02s with the fuel pack, then theres the 100.00 less cost (ebay dealers sell fuel pack for 189.00) On the other hand, PCIII can be dynotuned to get perfect performance provided you get the right guy tuning it and if later you do other mods you can have it re dynoed to that setup.

I have both. My Fuel Pak is on a 2000 RKC with a 95 kit. The PC111 is on a 2007 Ultra with a 103. I have never liked the fuel pak. Thereare probably improvements to the later versions but the2000 version was adjusted with a screw and was only adjustable for low, med, and high rpm (3adjustments). ThePCiii allows for fuel and timing adjustments in250 rpm increments and on eachcylinder independently. A lot more flexability and wont limit you WHEN you make more changes. You know you are gonna.
Those auto tunes are even better ....Ka ching!

Again my Fuel Pak is older...just my .02.
