I have a 2000 ultra classic. Just recently when I start it and the weather is cool out the tach starts going all over the place at idle and especially when throttle is applied. The check engine light comes on as well when this happens. The bike runs fine though. When I get to high gear and keep it above 3000 rpm it seems to do fine and the check engine goes off but as soon as I pull the clutch it does it again. I can park it and the weather is warm when I start it later in the day it doesn't do it. Park it and start it back in the AM and it shows up again. I rode it this afternoon problem free, parked it at my inlaws for a few hours and when the temp dropped outside it done it again. Once again when this happens the bike still runs fine. Help please.
I'd start with checking to make sure that the battery cables are clean and tight, and make sure that the battery ground cable is tight where if grounds to the frame.
If all this checks out, I'd recommend that you have your charging system (regulator and stator) checked.
My 2000 Ultra made it to 40,000 miles before it needed a stator.
Thanks 2am. The battery was replaced on July 4th this year and I have replaced the stator since then. July 11th. This was from a charging issue. All is new except the regulator. Once again it only does this when it has cooled off outside. If it's warm it is fine and when it does it it has no effect on the way the bike runs. Thanks for the reply
