Longest cold ride I have had was a 1500/24 Ironbutt and over 12 hours of it was below 35F, and I don't have any heated gear except grips. Like the others, I will ride until there is ice, which isn't often in Central TX but it does happen, especially on bridges. I am more worried about deer than I am ice in the cold weather.
I will ride in just about any temp and do ride all year long. I have a short commute so getting on the bike is a welcome distraction in the winter time. I have heated seats and grips on my bike so those keep things managable.
My criteria in the winter, as long as no snow or ice on my driveway, I will ride if the sun is out.
If its a choice between the cage and the bike, the bike almost always wins.
I used to ride until the daytime temp stopped reaching 40. I don't do that any longer as once I was caught in a nasty rain that turned to snow before I made it home. Now I find I am much more sensitive to colder temps. I suppose now with the Ultra I could get heated gear and tie into the accessory circuit. Guess I am just cheap and lazy.
It takes bright sunshine to get me out less than 30 degrees. There have been quite a few times I've been riding in melting snow. That does require a hose off to remove salt. Followed by soaking in the hot tub with Jim Beam and my OL.
Ten fifteen degrees over Richland Balsam Overlook Milepost 431.4 - Elevation: 6053' by Mt Michal on the blue ridge ,snow flurries, black ice, it was awesome. Nearly froze to death without heated gear. Wife was following in car with trailer, I stopped at lookout to warm up, she locked the doors would not let me in. Said if I warmed up I would trailer the bike and not go on.
It was one of the most memorable rides of my life, would do it again in a heart beat.
Here at home, twenty is about the lowest we get, with heated gear its not bad, but getting older around thirty is my new cut off point to ride to work.
Love this video from DKcustom.
Man! You all are truly road warriors. I own zero cold weather gear unless you call jeans, vented jacket, boots and a half helmet cold weather gear.... I guess my blood has thinned..... anything below 40 chills me to the bone!
The coldest I've ridden was 12* for work. No heated gear.
On my RKC, its definitely been below freezing, likely in the 20's.... But that was with an FXRG jacket, heated vest, gloves and soft lowers on the engine guards
