Help-02 RK sputtering and backfiring
I had a random stumble on my 02 RK. At first it seemed like low pressure as I was getting codes for misfires from both cylinders. I replaced EVERYTHING in the gas tank (since I broke the fuel pump trying to get the hose off....) and I no longer popped any codes, but would still get a random stumble. I tried to pay attention to when it was happening, and noticed it happened whenever I let the bike down to idle. My indy shop hooked up the datalogger and noticed the readings from the IAC were a little off. I blasted the IAC with TB cleaner and that seemed to cure it for a while.
The stumble came back after the bike sat for a month, but this time was generating a code for missing in the front only. I investigated the wiring to the injector, and it LOOKED and FELT ok, but I decided to replace it anyway, since it had a butt connector on it. When I heated the wire to solder on the extension, the shielding got soft and exposed a break right where the wire entered the plug. I didn't notice it until I warmed it up. I would say, to be safe, replace both connectors going to the injectors and leave slack in the line. The way the factory tied them up, even if they were only like that for 1000 miles before the zip tie being cut, by this many miles they could have given up internally. But this problem WILL pop a code.
In short, in about 200 miles, I had something (probably filter) fail in the tank. I had my IAC plug up and mess up off idle accel. I had my injector wire totally fail and pop a code. Got codes for the 1st and 3rd problem, none for the second. I've got 36k on it. At this point they're really projects. Anyone who thinks they won't be is kidding themselves. The PO took immaculate care of the bike, and owned it for 30ish k of those miles. The wires had "been addressed" by a cut zip tie and some length added, but they still failed. Wear and corrosion will continue to build because no one cleans every single inch of the bike (when is the last time you cleaned out your IAC preemptively?).
Thank you.
