Tizone, sounds like you should stick with your decision to buy the Ultra. It's a better match for your needs. Now if you should change your mind and want the stripped down good looks and performance of a Street Glide, then by all means have at it, but it sounds like the Ultra is the right bike for you and yours.
Yes you can make the tour pak detachable. I went through the exact same decision making process as you are. I went so far as to talk to the service manager and get a quote on making the pak detachable. I made sure they had done it before (which they had). This seems to me to be a very common request and I think Harley should make it an option. I know I would have paid extra for it. In the long run though, I immediately found it so handy that I doubt very seriously that I will ever remove it. This is coming from someone who does almost exclusively one up riding. I would buy the Ultra again in a heartbeat. Awesome bike.
Pretty simple. You can look cool or you can ride.
Only advantage a SG has is for people with shorter inseams.WHY would you want less supension travel on a long ride.Im not getten it.Im not saying a SG isn't a dandy bike. But if you got long enough legs get the Ultra.
