Ok so say we take the 2,722 mile route, then they'll meet/pass, whatever in about 20 hours and 10 minutes. (I guess they have aux tanks, **** relieve tubes etc.)

The guy driving 70 will have driven about 1411.6 miles and the guy driving 65 will have driven about 1310.4 miles, or there about.

Both are good 6 gear speeds, no down shifting required.

I'll let someone else plot the town.

This is getting serious ... Could a "Road Trip" be in the immediate future? The gas mileage claims will soon come into play, I'm sure.

You can "downshift and gun it", or you can stay in gear....
just stay out of neutral while attempting this !!!
Maybe best bet would be to refrain from passing if you are unsure....

One more thing to consider seriously, what are you riding? The throttle by wire bikes won't give you full throttle deflection (wide open throttle) until 3000 rpm. If you are cruising at 2500 rpm and twist to full throttle, the computer won't open the butterfly valve fully until you have accelerated enough for the engine to be turning 3000 rpm. If passing distance is tight and you need all available power, a downshift will put you closer to the peak power rpm and give you full throttle deflection sooner.

Higher gears, more speed
Lower gears, faster acceleration.

If I have lots of room, I just roll on more gas and pass. If I need to pass more quickly to be safe I downshift and accelerate faster and then shift back into my traveling gear.

Funny thing is I don't know if I ever thought about it until now. A downshift puts you square into the middle of your torque curve, gives you faster acceleration, and just seems so natural for someone who has ridden for a while. So long in fact, that it is hard for me to imagine being new enough to ask this question. But if I were a newbie, rube, poser or a look-a-like, I might not understand that a quick downshift will actually get me going faster to make my pass safer than by simply rolling on the gas. But it does.
