Maybe best bet would be to refrain from passing if you are unsure....

As for me, I gun it and roll on it hard so that the sound of my pipes leaps in front of me and they hear me coming...

Exclamation Passing and that kind of stuff . . .

Within the first 100 miles of me getting my new ride, a 2015 Ultra Ltd, I took the advance riders class at a local HD dealership. It was worth every penny . . . my goals were simple: Pass the class, spark the footboards and not drop the bike. I did all three and ended up knowing my bike much better as a result. Not everyone is a 'motorhead' and understanding where your bike is the strongest (RPM range vs Gear Selection) is something that might take you a while.

Good Luck!

Mark!!

Both are good 6 gear speeds, no down shifting required.

I'll let someone else plot the town.
Don't forget the black roadglide will go slightly faster. Make sure your calculations use the fugly factor.

Think about a bicycle from a complete stop. To get moving, you either need to put the bicycle in a low gear and pedal fast (high RPM, low torque), or put all your weight onto the pedal just to get it to turn half a revolution (low RPM, high torque).

When travelling on your motorcycle (or in a car for that matter), you're usually riding in the highest gear you can to keep your RPMs down and your gas mileage high. This leaves you with a limited amount of torque available in reserve.
Standing on your pegs won't do a thing to help.

So when you go to pass, you can either:
1. Accelerate slowly, using up any of the little torque you have in reserve. This makes the engine chug and gives you no way to accelerate faster in case of an emergency.
-OR-
2. Shift down one or two gears, increasing RPMs to compensate, leaving you with plenty of surplus torque, which will then allow you to accelerate faster.

I hope this was helpful.

Downshift and twist the throttle, not rocket science.... Unless of course you enjoy spending time in the opposite lane

If you have to ask this question you are not ready to pass. Hell I am not sure you are ready to be on the road. Get a dirt bike and learn how to ride.

It must be how I ask questions. I have taken the MSF course got my license. Before that road 20 years with a permit. I do want to take advanced course. If they ever offer it near me. This really explained it to me. Thank you.

Down shift, gun it, pause along side car long enough for hot babe to flash her tatas, continue on by with smile for next 2 miles
