I think the profit is most people only put on a few thousand, if that miles a year.

I went with one, it has paid back about 70% of the cost.
Some win, some lose.
If you don't, and you break down out on the road, do you have a better plan?
To each their own.

If you look at the poll numbers , throwing out the 4 "silly" votes, the numbers are surprising close. 41 no to 38 yes at the time I write this. Id have expected the numbers to be more like 2 to 1 against buying it. Since they live by the law of averages on this insurance the more of the policies they can sell, the more they net. Yes, HD must be making a tidy profit off this.
But what surprised me the most is that out of almost 80 people responding no one has complained about having a claim rejected.
The closest I have come to a rejection is when my clutch wore out. But I read the policy and knew the clutch, unless it failed due to a malfunction, was considered a wear item. So I didn't even try to make a claim since it failed from my abuse and, at that time, ignorance.

It has been my experience that if you don't start in on the service writer with an attitude, pretty much anything and everything will be covered. I've been to dealers all over the country and never had an issue with a service department.....To the point that they've bumped appointments to get me back on the road quickly.

Point being that I think people fret too much about getting things covered.

When I bought my used 2013 I purchased the non-Harley extended warranty. Having recently moved to Florida I knew I would be using it as our second vehicle and racking up the miles. Haven't made a claim on it yet.

Another choice on your poll should have been:
"Yes I bought one but haven't used it YET"

If I was a weekend rider or only putting on 4,000 miles a year I would not have bothered with one. Or, if I thought I would be trading up in the next couple of years.

it gives me peace of mind. IF something breaks, then i know its taken care of. same with the maintenance plan. i know that if i want to break even or get ahead, i have to ride. i'm into my third maintenance plan and since i don't wrench stuff myself, it works for me. I've come out ahead, costing the dealer money, every time, at least on this one. Over 46000 trouble free miles on the bike, well except for the voltage regulator, and still rolling down the highway. will have to think about getting another maintenance plan come August. the only thing i dont like about them is that they aren't honnored by other dealers and you have to keep going back to the one you purchased it from. thats ok, but it would be nice if it was honored by others. my dealer just extended to a three year maintenance plan from a two.

I'm kind of surprised by that as well. I wonder how much the poll data is skewed though - seems to me the large majority of active members here riding more miles than the average owner, but those 'average' owners probably comprise a much larger percentage of the ESP buying population...

We (active forum members) are probably the small percentage of ESP buyers who ride enough to make them maybe be "worth it" in a straight up purchase Vs covered Repair cost comparison.

I got the Extended Warranty and got back about 2-3 times what I paid for it. The compensator was replaced 3 times, new clutch, etc. By the time my warranty ended I had about 115,000 miles on it.

To each their own.
A dealer won't fix your bike if you break down without an extended warranty?

I am not much for waiting around, to be saved either.

Myself, I carry enough tools to fix mot things, if not I ould rent a uhaul and take it home.
