Hello all. I recently purchased a 2014 street glide, just over 19,000km on the bike. I have noticed the transmission feels more clunky than my previous bike (2015 street bob). Having a closer look/listen the other night, I have noticed a rattling noise when parked in neutral with clutch engaged. Disengage the clutch to put bike in gear and the noise goes away. Release the clutch lever and noise returns.. Sounds to me like something is loose inside the primary, which may be why the transmission feels more clunky when at speed and on/off the gas.
The bike is still under factory warranty and I also have the extended protection program. However I would like to deal with potential issues before they get worse. Perhaps this is normal for Harley transmissions as they break in? I didn't notice this on my street bob, nor did it ever feel clunky. Thought I'd do a little research before taking into the dealer to have a look.
neutral rattle is common on these bikes, it has to do with sloppy stack up of the gear set. that said, your inner primary bearing going bad. does it do it when it hot ?
I didn't notice much difference in the noise with temperature. Its just there..
I just read through the link posted above and the service bulletin. Yes, that is exactly the noise I'm experiencing. That sucks. Sounds like there is some hope of heavier weight gear lube helping to quiet it down. I think I'll drop it by the dealership for inspection anyways, that way its at least on file that its been brought in for this reason should anything come of it down the road.
redline shockproof heavy will help some. some bikes are worse than others, my 12 streetglide was really loud my 15 tri-glide really quiet. both had redline in them.
When I purchased my 1012 FLHTC I complained of this exact same thing at the 1000 mile service; the service manager replaced the transmission oil with Bel Ray Big Twin Transmission oil. 30,000 miles later and still quiet. (Yes I've changed the oil a few times since). Some friends use the Red Line transmission oil with equal success.
Definitely get it checked. The description is similar to what I heard on mine. Mine was a primary bearing. Waited too long...damaged the main shaft...had to replace both. VERY expensive (I'm not a wrench...had to have it done).
