i have only ridden an 88 once.... i had the 96 and now an 103 HO,,,, i would definitely look into some cam adjustments or a 95 build....if you go ride a 103 you will see what you are missing......
If i was in your shoes, I would go with a 98 inch kit, that you can get from one of our several engine building sponsors. They will work with you to help you achieve what you are looking for with out killing your bank account.
I first had a 6spd trans installed and quickly discovered that I needed more torque.
I had the "95" Big Bore Kit installed and I couldn't believe how it brought that bike to life.
Stage II ECM flash was needed to fuel the engine and my highway MPG's at 70-75 MPH was about 40MPG's. At 80MPH (3050RPMS's) was close to 35 or so MPG's.
I also had the S/E Hyd Cam Tensioner Kit installed and I did see an increase in oil pressure.
BTW, I talked to a guy that had an '03 Anniversary Edition Fatboy and he lost his engine at 25,000 miles when the tensioners broke apart and blocked engine oil flow.
Great looking bike! I will agree with the above, if you are doing your tensioners, now is a good time to think about a cam upgrade while she's opened up. I did mine at 25,000 and did the cam and tuner at this time. Made the bike a lot more fun IMO.
As for cosmetic changes, the options are endless. Go nuts!
