I have the Carhartt fleeced jeans and anything in the 50s you should be okay (some folks are more cold natured than others). Below 50 I wear UA coldgear base wear under the jeans and shirt.
I also do not like chaps.
I wear leather over-pants, they are warn, stop the wind and are rain resistant.

I wear Alpinestars Leather V-twin overpants. The fit on them is perfect and they have armor in the knees & hips. Usually I wear them with a pair of long johns underneath or a pair of jeans if Im going somewhere.
If it's really cold I wear merino wool long johns under my fleece-lined jeans. I have found that a set of gaiters really helps, as they keep the wind entirely out of the pant legs. Also the H-D "soft lowers" really make a difference in wind exposure to the legs. Firstgear heated socks for the toes, and Gordon's heated gloves... and I'm good into the 20's.

That's kind of what I was thinking . I bought some fleece lined
jeans today . We're trying them out Sat . I thought I might wear
some mid-weight UA under them just in case . It's supposed to
be around 59 Sat but where I want to ride is along a couple of
rivers & in a lot of shade . Planning a trip west next year & we're
trying to work out the gear for varying climates .
I bought a pair of leather "over pants" in '06 and I still have them and they still look very good.
You buy then one size (if you wear 36" waist pant's you buy 38" over pants) and they fit over your jeans. I have worn thermal long-johns under hem before and that also works well, you just can't take them off in mixed company!
The pants retain more warmth than chaps because they're not "buttless" and they also give me a little extra protection from the rain if I cannot get into my rain suit quickly.
Mrs B and I ride in proper bike suits, in our case Halvarssons. I gave up trying to wear unsuitable gear in cold weather decades ago. If the Swedes can't keep warm (and dry) on a bike there is no hope......
