Default DD5 Builders Kit

Hi all,

I'm hoping I can get some direction for me and my 99 Road King Classic EFI. Bought it in 07 with 10k on her. 132k on the clock now, 50k into a SE 95 kit with darkhorse crank, 06 stock heads installed at rebuild. She had the 3.37 gearing and when I upgraded to a 07 swingarm I had a 33(from a 32) tooth tranny pulley installed along with narrower belt. 90 hp/ 106 tq after the rebuid. Tranny has always required a little more effort upshifting from 2 -3rd. Late last year it popped out of 3rd gear 3-4 times. I just upshifted again and didn't think that much about it. My plan has been to keep my old girl and keep riding her as a new bike really isn't in the equation plus I have it the way I want it with bars, heated custom seat, upgraded brakes and suspension. I got an email from Baker for the DD5 builders kit for $838 and the gears inside my head started spinning a little. If the tranny is going to require a rebuild at some point (question is how soon) does it make sense to pick up this kit at 60% off now and just bite the bullet.
Thought and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have learned the hard way and want to do it right and cost effective this time....goldie

i'd only consider a 6 speed- either a close ratio or a .86 overdrive final.

if you are in there, why not alter the tranny to your desires.

if you are just worried about the 5 speed- take off 5 speed sets are fairly common and low value. and it's likely the sliding mechanism, not the gears

air impact tools should not be used in the primary drive- on the comp they can knock the magnets off the rotor- on the clutch hub/ tranny mainshift they can screw the shifter dogs

primary chain adjustment, shifter and clutch adjustment can make for ooops shifts

one of my pals had shifting trouble...turn out his lever was too close the floorboard ( "keeps it out of the way of my boot") and wasn;t getting full movement- it would contact the rubber pad

tough call imo, I have done stuff like that and gone full blown ocd. I wouldnt want it sitting around gettin rusty unless your going to do the work now....? I think baker has an overnight rebuild exchange too?

I am kinda like you...I plan on keeping my 02. I would spend a little extra and go 6 speed.
That is my plan.

Man it sounds like the 6 speed is the more popular option, but I tell ya...wish my 2011 had the old 5 speed.

My dads 2003 FLHRC runs like a top. When we ride together it always seems like the 6 speed is in between a gear, where as the 5 speed has a more natural feel.

Just my 2 cents...

I've got a custom build, with a slightly larger rear wheel, so when I installed my DD6 I used the smaller comp Baker offers, plus a smaller front pulley. I get slightly lower first gear, for those Alpine climbing hairpins, plus a slightly higher top gear, for chasing Porsches down the autobahns! Plenty of scope to play tunes with our gearing, especially on Evos and TC88s.

true, the stock rear pulley for US bikes was 70T for most models

my FXRP has a 61T rear pulley and a softail belt...the early 90's version of overdrive-

on my 95 FLHTC I would mount up a 65T for long trips- this would drop the revs a few hundred rpms at highway speeds- the adjusters had just enough travel to make this work. the pulley cost $40 and a handful of new bolts was about $10 each swap. time: less than an hour

Talking

My 1990 Glide is an International model and came new with that 61T, but I changed it later for a US spec 70T. No accounting for taste!

the FXRP had much more power and much less weight, so the taller gearing works.

cam and supertrapp 2/1 tuning give that motor good early torque

I can;t imagine a stock evo heavy touring model and a 61T...

Unhappy

International models around then had a lot going against them, with even quieter mufflers than US spec, quieter airbox, restricter in the inlet manifold, plus that taller gearing. Lots of work to undo all that harm......
